The way he considers a new object from a safe distance before approaching it with the careful deliberateness of a bomb disposal technician. The deep, resonant sound he produces when he decides that something worth commenting on has occurred. Jack does not know he is funny. He never will. And that is the whole beautiful thing about it.

He needs someone steady and warm and patient in the way that good things are patient — not gritting their teeth against difficulty but genuinely, easily comfortable with a pace and a rhythm that most of the world has forgotten how to appreciate. He does not need a trainer or an athlete or someone with a detailed plan for his development.
